Full requirements — experience, exams, fees, insurance, renewal and reciprocity — are detailed below.

How to become a licensed HVAC contractor in Utah

Follow these steps to earn your H100 HVAC Contractor (replacing the former S350 HVAC Contractor classification). Every figure is verified against the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL); full detail for each step is further down the page.

  1. Build the required experience. As of April 20, 2026, H100 applicants must show 2 years of HVAC-specific experience verified by W-2 forms (or PEO/payroll documentation), including evidence of 4,000 hours of HVAC experience within the past 5 years (or an active Utah plumber license instead). General construction experience alone no longer qualifies. The qualifier must also be a Certified Natural Gas Technician (Rocky Mountain Gas Association or equivalent certificate).
  2. Pass the HVAC (H100) trade exam and Utah Business and Law exam exams. Providers, passing scores and fees are in the Exams section below.
  3. Check the insurance rules. Liability: Required: minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 aggregate (DOPL listed as certificate holder). Property damage: Covered within the general liability policy. Workers' compensation: Required if you have employees, or a Workers' Compensation Coverage Waiver from the Utah Labor Commission.
  4. Clear the background check. No routine fingerprint background check; DOPL reviews criminal history via its Criminal History Guidelines.
  5. Meet the credit / financial requirement. No credit-score requirement; financial responsibility must be demonstrated (see bond).
  6. Submit your application and fees. Apply through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) — $175 (HVAC Contractor) application fee, plus a Included in application fee license fee. Processing time: Variable; DOPL does not publish a guaranteed processing time.
  7. Keep the license active. Renewal: Every 2 years (expires Nov 30 of odd years). Continuing education: 6 CE hours per renewal (3 must be taught live; a live webinar counts).

Local / municipal notes

A 25-hour pre-licensure course is required for specialty contractors. HVAC licensing changed in 2026: S350 was phased out and replaced by H100, which added HVAC-specific experience and a trade exam (the new rules took effect April 20, 2026). No separate individual journeyman license exists for HVAC; the contractor license governs.
